A HyFlex classroom is a model is a classroom design that allows students to engage in course content and learning activities face to face, online or a little of both. As the classroom instructor the challenge is how align all these elements so a student can seamlessly transfer between both environments. Are you considering this model in the current COVID-19 challenged classroom? If so, here are a couple of steps to make the process easier and more efficient.

- Begin with core content. You need to know exactly what content is being addressed in the lesson. These materials should be in the form of either a lesson presentation or a student note taking outline. Once you have created this document, its easy to make lesson supporting materials. Its just a matter of cutting and pasting passages and information from one document to another.
- Record: Recording yourself is a vital bridge to providing instruction to learners. Whether its online or face to face, some students need extra opportunities to hear and understand instructions. Rather than explaining it over and over, record. As an additional benefit, you can easily email parents with information so they can be a partner in learning. My favorite is Screencast-O-Matic.
- Give opportunities for reinforcement: Provide a Google Doc with some prepared questions or activities that students can easily edit and return. These provide opportunities for kids to engage in the content and apply it to different situations. Ask kids to take pictures and integrate it with the lesson, these provide meaningful ways to extent learning. Want to be more efficient? Create a Quizizz after identifying course content, these allow students to practice materials with ease.
- Hands on activities: Be sure to think of simple hand on activities that require simple materials. It might be as easy as having students collect examples of pine trees (evergreens). Or maybe taking pictures of nutrition labels in their kitchens. The key is activities that allow them to reflect that don't require four students in a lab group.
